Outdoor Affiliate Events

Posted in Daily Grind, Web Marketing on January 12th, 2010

I’m about to start a busy ten days smack in the middle of the Utah January thaw. Maybe the real deal POW will show up when I’ll need it most  towards the end of the month. Although I certainly wouldn’t complain if I was on top of Baldy today. Check out Alta’s pic of the day for 1/11/10…

On Sunday the AvantLink crew will be leaving for Vegas for Affiliate Summit…arrive Sunday morning and leave Tuesday morning. Two nights is good for me. It’s honestly about all I can handle in one of those casinos. Maybe I’ll only spend $100-a nickel at a time-this year.

Wednesday night we have an Outdoor Industry Association dinner in Salt Lake City, and then OR winter market starts on Thursday. Looking forward to seeing a range of people there. And on Saturday, January 23rd our company is sponsoring both an educational seminar on Affiliate marketing and a meet and greet reception. If you’re reading this, going to OR, and have an interest in Affiliate marketing feel free to come around for one of both of the events. Here are some details:

Big (soon-to-be) AvantLink News

Posted in Web Marketing on September 8th, 2009

I decided to post a sneak peak to some soon-to-be breaking technology news for our company AvantLink.com. Scott Kalbach already published a piece on his blog, so this is technically the second sneak peak. At any rate…

David Clark, our CTO, has developed a killer integrated tool that will allow our merchant partners to police their protected keywords from rogue Affiliate paid search marketing. Some ski bums reading this might be scratching their heads and thinking WTF…so I apologize if that’s the case. But fact is that AvantLink might someday help me come out of ski bum retirement, and get back to blogging full time. So read up now (this is part of my prepared PRWeb piece that will roll out as part of the marketing push for the “Paid Search Review” tool):

TITLE/HEADLINE
Free Trademark Bid Monitoring Service from AvantLink

NEWS RELEASE SUMMARY
Web retailers using the AvantLink Affiliate network now have the ability to more closely monitor company name, domain name or trademark paid search bids using the Paid Search Review tool, available for free in the merchant account management interface.

NEWS RELEASE BODY
Park City, UT (PRWEB) September, 2009 — AvantLink announced today the addition of a powerful tool for retailers using their leading Affiliate marketing technology platform. The Paid Search Review tool allows merchants to monitor a self-configured keyword list of paid search marketing bids by their Affiliates, through a fully integrated network report. This tool was inspired by the open source code written by Mark Silliman available at iTrademarkBidding.com. However AvantLink CTO David Clark expanded upon that original idea to develop an enhanced keyword monitoring tool specific for the network, that is now available free of charge to merchants.

“One of the major business issues we find ourselves battling every day at AvantLink.com, is the problem generally referred to in the Affiliate marketing industry as Trademark Bidding,” says Scott Kalbach, founder and CEO of AvantLink. “This is the practice of Affiliates bidding on merchant names, domain names or trademarks via paid search ads to drive traffic.” He continues, “We have a policy that prohibits this activity, and we enforce it. However enforcement has become increasingly difficult now that we’re approaching 200 merchants in our network. This tool will assist us, and our merchant partners directly, in more robust brand protection and Affiliate terms of use compliance.”

About AvantLink.com:

My Gang Likes Deep Powder Snow

Posted in Daily Grind, Web Marketing on August 21st, 2009

Some time ago (measurable in the “years” category), I threw together a Squidoo lens all about powder & fat skis. It’s been sitting there neglected by me…yet with a respectable amount of traffic, especially in the winter months. Yessir ever since I can remember I have been in the top 5 serps in Google for the term fat skis! It’s been a pretty cool experiment to say the least.

Well I did a little updating to my fat skis lens today to highlight some new features, and link to some stuff at this blog. Looking pretty good if I do say so myself. Oh, and now the rants of yours truly @ Ski Bum Poet will syndicate to my lens.

Maybe you’ve heard of Squidoo but never checked it out. Maybe you’re like what the hell is he talking about already. Either way, if you’re a web marketer, build a Squidoo lens using all the basic SEO knowledge you have (target KWs in URL and headline of page, strategically link in and out of your lens, etc.)…then point some links to your web site(s) for some good link juice.

Disclaimer: I used a lot of Squidoo lenses a few years back to drive traffic. I can’t say I am up to speed on everything over there now, but I do know some of my lenses rank damn good still, driving traffic and helping other sites build more link authority.
